Miniatures combines stray demo recordings with other processed environmental sounds, linked by their offhand recording medium: the iPhone.

Casually documenting found sounds as a type of audio snapshot has been a long-running habit without any pre-conceived outcome, created instinctively to be reviewed at an unknown point in the future.

In the same way, the demo recordings capture an ephemeral moment in time. Born from impatience and a craving for creative immediacy, the improvised pieces were written and recorded simultaneously into the nearest available device.

These one-off performances retain a free-flowing quality that eluded any follow up attempts to recreate them, so they ended up becoming the defining versions rather than serving as reference for later work.

This leaves them stuck with the decisions made in that moment, good or bad, and listening back can create mixed feelings. The refining process can be like reliving a memory and analysing it in fine detail; seeing all the mistakes, then trying to conceal them in a hope that nobody notices.

But then, maybe it’s an exercise in coming to terms with past decisions: accepting that you can’t change what happened, then making peace by finding and appreciating the positives that came from them.
